Roma – Introduction

Roma – Introduction

The following images were taken in Spring of 2004, while I was studying in Rome. This gallery attempts to serve as a visual travelogue of the goings-on. Thus, these photos will attempt to achieve a balance between aesthetics and description.

More than any other photo on this website, the one at right is called a favorite by visitors. Tim Scovic and I were sitting at a bar for lunch (bars in Italy are akin to cafes in the US), when suddenly I caught the name of the bar in the mirror of a motorino. I call this photo, Ciao, Roma, but a friend of mine suggested the alternate title of Amor’.

2004-03-27 – Other People’s Pictures

I’m leaving tomorrow for Cincinnati, where I will spend a week for “Intense Orientation.” So, to tide you over until then, I found some shots of Savoca, Sicily. This has been a destination of mine for some time, but now after seeing these sites, it’s a top priority. I am not returning to the states until my feet have felt the terrain of Savoca.

2004-04-03 – Newark Airport: 4 Hour Layover

I haven’t flown since enrolling at UC. Interesting to see how my education has impacted my thinking. As the plane lifted from the ground, the visage of man’s dominion filled me both with respect and disgust.

Cookie cutter suburbs, positioned at skewed, intersecting grids, are gouged by huge black arteries of freeway. At another time of the year, a canopy of green boughs might hide this scarring of the earth.

Can we honestly consider this success? Progress? Leaving Cincinnati, entering Newark, both seemed exactly the same from the air. A mess of buildings and roads, reeking of the corruption that accompanies excess… a Home Depot, identifiable easily from the air by its hideous orange canopies, consumed the view from my window with its bulk. Giant mansions, tributes to their owners’ fortunes, seem like overkill after spending a week living with six other people in a 3,000 square foot house, comfortably, luxuriously, with room to spare.

Special Thanks

I would like to thank everyone for their continuing support, suggestions, and comments regarding this site. This has been a daunting exercise at learning a number of new aspects of HTML code. While I cannot possibly thank everyone who helped, not even all of those who made major suggestions, I must send a special thank you to Anne Savoca, my sister, and to my good friend Jay Dial. Without you, this web site would not be what it is.
