Elephant Butte Lake

The horizontal emphases in this shot seem almost planned. The water, the wide stretches of land, the clouds…

The stillness of the photograph belies the rapidly changing weather. It was quite windy here (as evidenced by the rippling water) and weather systems moved in and out, tossing thunderstorms all around the countryside.

Elephant Butte and T or C

An hour north of Las Cruces is Truth or Consequences, with a name so long that maps and street signs abbreviate to “T or C.” The adjoining community of Elephant Butte has a lake of the same name, created artificially by a dam built in the 1920’s.

From the white rings at the base of the rocky outcroppings, it becomes obvious just how dry the summer was.

Las Cruces

A number of my projects at ARC are based in Las Cruces, a town three hours south of Albuquerque and an hour’s drive northwest of El Paso, TX.

By far, the most striking and memorable features of the second-largest city in the state are the dramatic Organ Mountains to the east.

This view came from my hotel room in the late afternoon. Better than the shot of the Organ mountains at sunrise (above), this gives an idea of just how craggy the peaks of the range really are.
