One day back at home, I was watering the flowers on one of those brilliant Ohio summer days. The vibrant colors made luscious by the combination of water and sunlight begged for a photo shoot.

While co-oping in New York, I decided to take a bus to Boston to see some of my UC friends who were co-oping there. We took a train about an hour out of town, and spent some time walking up and down the beach.

The hotel which served as my apartment in Rome had a back balcony that opened onto a lovely little courtyard. I’d often take my laptop out there to work amongst the fresh breezes and idle chatter.
One day, I was feeling inspired – or, perhaps it’s better to say that I was inspired to do anything other than work. I grabbed my camera and shot some of the flowers in the planters.

After much rain, the clouds parted while we visited the Circus of Maxentius, just outside the gates of Rome. While most people quickly sketched and shot photos of the ruins, I happened to glance skyward and saw a photo op.
While a magician must never reveal his secrets, I have to admit this: the image was doctored just a bit. I Auto-Leveled it in Photoshop to increase the drama. It really brought out the blue in the center, as was my aim, but a pleasant side effect was the darkening of the clouds at the corners, harbingers of yet another rain storm.

This is one of my earliest photographs. Right around New Year’s Eve, the snow began to thaw, and dripped from the eaves of my house onto the snow below.
I don’t know what it was that gave me the idea, but by turning the camera upside down, an ordinary sight becomes something almost mystical.
